Every property owner in Whatcom County pays taxes to the Port.
From every home in Bellingham to every farm on the Pole Road.
From Sumas to Lummi Island.
And we know hardly anything about what they do with our money.
Whatcom Port Watch will post occasional reports on the Port.

This web site

In July 2001, this site was started with the goal of informing Whatcom County citizens of what the Port of Bellingham was doing. This was timed to the November election for two of the three Port commissioners.

Now - a year later, we are reviving this site for occasional reports of Port activities. While you can expect critical reports, this does not rule out positive reports.

However, the Bellingham Herald never misses a chance to write a story based on Port press releases. The Herald seems loath to run a critical story. That is the where this site hopes to fill a void.

If you are want to criticize what is posted here, or provide a correction to a factual error, or offer a suggestion, then email to:

editor@nwcitizen.us

I also accept any anomynous information on Port activities that the public should know about.

Jet fuel or aviation gasoline?

(Sep 2001) Since seeing these photos at this site, the Port repainted the truck. If you were a fueler, which fuel would you think was in this truck?

The Port should not have run Alpha Aviation out of business at the airport. They provided professional fueling and general aviation services. The Port will now lose more taxpayer money trying to "make a profit" at what should be a private business.

Bellwether Office Building
(2001) Illegal occupancy, fire code violations, project competing with private sector office buildings - and Commissioner Scott Walker thinks this is a show piece of Port development.

Commissioner Doug Smith conflict of interests
(August 2001) Mr. Smith thinks contructing half million dollar buildings on Port property for Port tenants does not violate state law. Further, he doesn't think we citizens should be concerned.

Are you allowed to view this web site?

(Sep 2001) Port of Bellingham employees are not allowed to visit this web site. The have been told that if caught viewing Whatcom Port Watch on their computer at work that they would be immediately terminated.

They were warned that the Port has snooper software to detect which web sites an employee has visited. I guess this site and porn sites are on the forbidden list.
