From a Political Junkie: All I want for 2011 is my two front teeth
Riley, we have a federal government that is apparently demented with military spending, financed 40% by borrowed money, that garners ZERO income taxes from the richest corporations like Exxon (2009 income tax paid: $0.00), that levies taxes at a higher rate on the poor and middle class than on the rich (Warren Buffet, e.g. pays only 15% on his tens of millions of unearned income - I pay 15.5% off the top for “self-employment tax” and then another 25% in income tax, and I’m certainly not rich), and wastes billions on the most corrupt regimes around the world (Hamid KArzai’s brother was found with $56 million in cash on his way to deposit it in his personal bank account in Dubai - all received courtesy of you and me and our demented government) - all this and your top priority is Marriage Equality?
Give your head a shake, pal.
I agree we need a fair tax system and to cut the defense budget. But right now there isn’t the political will for these sort of changes. Every single one of these items is accomplishable this cycle. Most of them will have an immediate positive change in our communities. And yes, civil rights are extremely important to me.
Mr. Camp,
With all due respect, you need to read Exxon’s financial statements more closely.
Income taxes to the US and multiple countries, State taxes, sales taxes, duties, and a huge list of misc. taxes are all totaled up on Exxon’s SEC 10-K.
In 2007 Exxon paid a total of $105 billion dollars in total taxes
In 2008 Exxon paid $116 billion in total taxes.
In 2009 Exxon paid a total of $78 billion in taxes, and they have not yet paid their Federal tax bill.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is accurate, and that is not chump change nor escaping taxation.
Riley,
The government should get out of the marriage business completely and stick to civil unions for any two people who wish to be together as a legal unit. Leave “marriage” to the various religious groups and let them argue the merits of marriage between those other than a man and a woman. Individuals who do or don’t like gay marriages can argue then with their clergyman instead of wasting the time of those of us in the public commons.
@Dick. Works for me. Everyone’s Marriage is now a civil union, which carries all the legal weights, responsibilities, tax stuff, etc. Let marriage be a term for religion. Sold.
Doug - I stand corrected. I meant to refer to Halliburton, which in 2009 not only paid no US income taxes, it actually filed for a $30 million refund! How did they do this after profiting mightily from tens of billions in no-bid contracts courtesy of their man in the WHite House? They moved their head office to Dubai where they are not liable to pay any US taxes on their continuing US government contracts.
How is Halliburton still receiving US govt contracts as a foreign corporation? How is their behavior not disloyal or even treasonous?
Riley - I don;t mean to diminish civil rights goals and achievements. However, the federal government is mismanaged and misgoverned to such an irresponsible, duplicitous, and destructive level that it has to be dealt with. That we have such a cowardly, useless, and corrupt group of federal legislators that they won’t deal with it is disgraceful. I don’t have any influence (that requires millions - I’m just a citizen who gets to pay for the whole mess) but I don;t think giving them a couple of feelgood achievable items to work on does anything but give them licence to continue to rob us blind.
Dave,
I hate to rain on your parade, but a quick check on Yahoo Finance shows that Halliburton paid income taxes of 518 millions, 1.2 billion, and 907 millions in 2009, 2008, and 2007 respectively.
I am going to assume that this figure does not include state, local, property, sales, or a host of other taxes.
All corporations, both large and small follow basically the same rules, so I am not surprised is a corporations does not pay taxes in a specific year. The devil is in the details, and periodically even corporations obtain a rebate, because they have overpaid their taxes, just like individuals do.
I am not sure that I disagree with your point, but unfortunately the facts that you are bolstering your argument with appear to be inaccurate.
Mr. Sweeney?
Was it not Cato the Younger, who first used a filibuster, around 55 B.C.
At 9:51 on the morning of June 10, 1964, Senator Robert C. Byrd completed an address that he had begun 14 hours and 13 minutes earlier. The subject was the pending Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Now the democrats want filibuster reform, come on Riley, whats the hurry, being out of compliance always requires a democrat, just go ask Lincoln about his Civil Rights Act of 1863, what’s the big hurry?
And lets stop breaking the law at 311 Grand Avenue?
My God, how long will that take, another 100 years, with the biggest hoot of all, the clownshow, just a little south over Pickett’s Bridge?
Can we make divorce a civil right too Riley?

Of course breaking the law is required to get elected, and work in government, just go ask Obama, Crawford, and Frank Chopp too!

“A childs education should begin at least 100 years before he
he is born.” Oliver Wendell Holmes
Todd Granger, I’m having a little trouble following your logic here. How is Divorce not a civil right? If we implement marriage equality than those relationships will have the same rights as straight ones to end their connection. I think we can come into compliance with the growth management act, if we had a county council that did not believe they were above the law.
The filibuster reform would not do away with the filibuster but rather prevent its abuse, returning it to its original form and purpose.
