City Council Fails Us Again
Last week, I released an article here, about the fake fiber plan the city was putting before the City Council. There was a lot of public outcry and many members of the public wrote to the council and mayor demanding a real plan, a Dig Once policy, and a new BAG (Broadband Advisory Group) that was not heavily influenced by big telecom. The motion was tabled for “further discussion” …or so we were told last week. Then on Monday of this week, it was approved with no “further discussion” or even an acknowledgement of all the public input. They simply ignored us and waited for us to look away, even though their own report shows that the majority of the public wants a public network service.
Friend of big telecom and co-creator of the fake report, John Gavin, ran Monday night’s entire discussion. Members of the public who wrote in were responded to with a litany of lies. For example, there is still no plan to provide public access to the existing, or any future, public fiber that the public has paid for, even though we could use it to provide tiny home villages, and others in need, with virtually free network services. There is no plan to expand network services at parks and other public locations that already have it, even though it would cost virtually nothing to do so. In short, there is no plan to help the poor because they don’t care about the poor.
Instead, the council acted exactly like the Trumpsters they are always railing about: they ignored the public. They let big telecom run the meeting then approved the fake plan written by big telecom. Here is the video link if you are interested.
As usual, they let the public know that if they wanted our opinion, they would have already given it to us. There is still no Dig Once policy and we are not even going to meet the standards set by towns right next door to us that have excellent public networks, like the city of Mount Vernon. In fact, John Gavin intentionally and completely ignored the Mount Vernon Open Access model in the report he provided, which was primarily written by WAVE executive Melissa Miller. Like most issues, the council is making this a problem for future generations to deal with and taking no real action.
I’ll leave you with an interesting statistic that explains what is going on in the background of our government as highlighted in the film “Unbreaking America.” What do you think the possibility is of passing a bill that has 0% public support? According to a study from Princeton, the answer is 30%. So, what do you think the likelihood is of passing a bill that has 100% public support? The answer is still 30%. The results of this study played out right here this week, and as the study shows, the City Council simply does NOT listen to us. They listen to their big money donors in the background. Just like with everything else. Our opinions do not matter to them. They disdain us and don’t want to hear from us. The Whatcom Democrats truly have become the Trump Democrats. Let’s stop electing them.
P.S. My original article ended one sentence ago, however several of the dozens of fiber petition supporters that wrote to the City Council about critical fiber infrastructure asked me to analyze the list of lies they received from the COB. Here is my analysis.
In short, they lied to us because they hate us and don’t want to hear from us. And the “Democrats” wonder why they lost the election to an Orange Buffoon like Musk, I mean Vance, I mean Trump. Maybe it’s because even hardcore, Bernie supporting, liberals like me can’t stand them anymore and are sick of being lied to. Will the Democrats ever learn from their mistakes and actually stick up for working class people? Well, they had a chance with fiber and they chose big telecom and fascism instead of poor families… so… I guess the answer is no. Their elitism and arrogance know no bounds.
