I had to travel a long way to become mindful of the importance of math. Not calculus nor trig nor geometry….just math. With grandkids in tow this week, we rented a row boat on Lake Hume, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When it came time to pay for the boat, the young adult handling the rental said “Twenty dollars for one hour…and you had the boat for an hour and a half…..hmmm”, and turned to a friend for help with the calculation. I imagined that my jaw dropped so far, I could have swallowed a whole copy of Wikipedia.
Amazed, I struggled with this for awhile. How will this young person make it in the world without basic skills? Who is to blame for this? The schools? Government? Fourth grade teachers?
Then I thought “perhaps it is my fault.” I’m really old school…literally. Hi tech to me when I was that clerk’s age was the abacus and ultimately, the slide rule. So in fact I’m probably being judgmental. Clearly math was of value to my generation as we had no alternative. If I wanted three licorice sticks for 5 cents each, I needed to figure out that I needed…..hmmm, how much?
