Why Whatcom Liberals Lost
Why Whatcom Liberals Lost
What caused the local Democrats to take such a beating? Kelli losing to a first time candidate who could not answer questions without notes is the shocker. Jean was soundly defeated by a guy who mostly avoided groups his handlers did not control. Tony was persuaded at the last minute by Sam Crawford to run for office. Tony and Vincent had little knowledge of local issues. And yet they trounced their opposition.
Is it all just a credit to Republican and Tea Party campaign tactics and to the will of Whatcom County citizens to be more conservative? Or did the Democrats contribute to this huge swing in our local politics?
I was at the Ds chosen watering hole last night - a place it took 45 minutes to get a simple beer - and to me the answers to questions of why and how can be seen in the small dynamics of the social practices at the gathering. (As well as the inability to organize a gathering.) It was not unlike past election gatherings except that every liberal candidate in the room lost last night.
Here is a story that encapsulates the essence of the problem local liberals, enviros, greens and Democratic Party stalwarts have. In the early 1990s I took my then 10 or 12 year old son with me for the election night events - courthouse and parties, except for bars. He is now in his mid twenties, married and living in California. We went into the Ds party and he saw them all turning their backs to me or refusing to even say hi to me and generally letting me know I was not welcome. I'm very liberal but I seldom agree with all that the Ds put forward. We left and went over to the Republican party - where we were warmly greeted and my son was quickly invited to enjoy the food that was spread out on a table. The Rs knew I was against most of their candidates in that room and they didn't care. My son is a Republican now, partly because of what he experienced that evening.
Point: The local liberals of Whatcom County are very closed to anyone who does not agree with a dozen litmus tests. The conservative leaders don't care if you agree with them on all issues as they just want your vote. I personally think it is contrary to the best interests of even local Tea Party members that Tony is now on the County Council and Jean is not. Her defeat was not because of her or her campaign - but because she was one of the liberal candidates. She was road kill - totally unintentional casualty.
Last night I heard mention of 1994 several times but did not hear of 1991 even once. I remember well those two elections but our Ds forget the cause of the huge 1994 victory of local conservatives to the County Council. In 1991, environmentalists took control of the County Council and proceeded to turn a deaf ear to concerns of rural folks as they forced through some very onerous and over the top laws that were part of an enviro agenda. The Ds were arrogant and they lost big in 1994. And they have never learned.
Last night, many of the old stalwarts again declined to even acknowledge my presence while many of the younger ones were more open and friendly. Mayor Dan Pike walked past me six times - I counted - without saying hi or acknowledging me. Late in the evening we met going opposite directions in a doorway and he weakly extended his hand and said hi. He needed us Independents to get elected but the day he took office he started cozying up to the Ds leadership and fell right in with the exclusionary practices of the local liberal leadership. He has told associates he does not need us Independents for reelection.
I think the best interests of rural county residents will not be served by Tony or Vincent. The rural voters were fooled. With this election, the Whatcom Ds are asking themselves why they lost so dramatically. I doubt they will ask the right questions and so they will not get the right answers. They will get mad at me for this post and not get the point of it at all. I heard no talk last night about how Skagit County - with help from the Bellingham south side - elected Ds to the state legislature with Jeff Morris and Kristine Lytton winning easily. Totally opposite from Whatcom County. Skagit Ds are far more open minded.
I've not mentioned Jason Overstreet. I think he will be a very good representative of the interests of rural and urban residents of Whatcom County. He has a practical approach to issues which is contrary to his conservative philosophy. He knew the issues at forums and he listens. He will be his own person - very unlike Vincent and Tony who are pawns.
