Where is the logic?
Ellen Murphy sent us a statement that sums up some interesting aspects of Bellingham Herald reporting. The Herald is subtly editoralizing, masked as reporting. She would have posted her observations on the Herald website, except they now require Facebook registration and log in. If you follow the link below to Ralph’s post, be aware the Herald now charges to view articles online - and some of us find ourselves unable, even then, to see the comments where Ralph also posts.
“If Ralph Schwartz is correct in saying that Cole was bothered more by Taber’s follow-up than by Robson’s piece, (and that point did also come through in Cole’s letter to WW), then why did Cole not threaten to sue Taber and his publisher rather than, or in addition to, Robson and hers? Where is the logic?
“On another note, I hope someone will look up the word resolved. In addition, I would ask of reporters that when someone tells them they were “offended,” the reporter report just that: that someone said they were offended, and not make a factual statement that the person was offended, especially in a headline. Can everything a person says they feel be taken as fact? As a therapist, I can tell you…uh, no. If I tell you I feel offended (which I do), just write that Ellen says she feels offended. Because what if I’m delusional, or manipulative, or lying, or grossly exaggerating? Where would that leave you and your paper?”
