Port - the two reform candidates, John Blethen and Mike McAuley.
The current Commissioners are taking us down the path of perdition. The numbers need to be believed - the Port is losing money and going deeper in debt each year. Walker has directed over $180 million in valuable, low-interest bonds to his employer, Arco Refinery, over the past 15 years while he has ignored the rest of the firms in our county. This is almost criminal. Smith has not been shy about taking advantage of his powerful position on the Port to pad his pockets with steel building construction jobs on Port property for the past 15 years. This is criminal. The Port needs to be reformed. Our financial well being requires it. Bremerton and Everett didn't believe their Port numbers and they are in serious trouble now.
County Council:
Carl Weimer is the smartest and best-prepared person on the council. Each of us may disagree with a vote or two of his, but overall this guy is outstanding. Carl is a leader and very practical. Anyone who has watched a council session becomes aware of how lucky we are to have Carl there. Conservative or liberal, you want Carl back on the council.
Laurie Caskey-Schreiber is liberal and not always very practical, but in the end she is better than Knutzen. Early in the campaign I was impressed with Bill. But he has been shown to be another lacky of the BIA, realtors and gravel companies. I was deceived, as he has been their guy since the beginning, in early June.
Ken Mann has the promise of being a good representative of us citizens. He is well prepared from his time on the Planning Commission. He is smart and knows the issues. This guy is also his own person.
Dan McShane - Well, I certainly have personal issues with this guy and his campaign team. But that cannot get in the way of what is best for our county. Dan belongs back on the council because he has a mastery of all of the issues in our county and he has our best interests at heart. He is just far better than his opponent.
A word about the other three council candidates. They were picked and coached by the secretive, very right wing powers in this county. These three, Mary Beth, Kathy and Michelle are simply not qualified to be council members. If elected, they will take their orders from the BIA and realtors.
Bellingham Council:
Catherine Chambers has over 20 years of community service and political involvement. She is very smart, knows the issues and is an outstanding listener. Michael has raised a lot of money, but has little community experience. In truth, anyone who talks to him about issues quickly realizes he either is ignorant of the subject or has his mind made up. Catherine will be an outstanding council member.
Orphalee Smith - yes. Write her in. Orphalee may not be a magnetic speaker but she is very savvy and is her own person. She would bring a fiscally conservative approach to our city and, as an accountant, she knows her stuff. Seth is lazy and has not worked very hard on the County Council. He is fuzzy on the issues. It is time for Seth to be turned out to pasture. Yes, he is charming and likable, but we need much more than that.
