Of the four candidates for County Executive, we all - conservatives and liberals - would probably most prefer Jack Louws.  Liberals are horrified at the idea of Doug Ericksen and conservatives are horrified at the idea of Stalheim.   We all like Tom Anderson but many will avoid voting for him as they feel compelled to vote for a possible winner.

I'm posting this just a few hours before the first returns are posted by the auditor.   It strikes me as ludicrous that we will finish with all of us knowing, unless we are voting for Jack, that our second or third choice is Jack.  For most, Doug is the fourth choice.  Those voting for Stalheim really fear the idea of Doug winning in November. Those who like Tom feel the need to vote for Stalheim just to get him into the general election.

If we end up with Doug and Jack in the general election, then Louws will easily win because liberal voters will support him.  If we end up with Stalheim and Doug, then a majority of county residents - liberals and conservatives - will be disappointed with whoever is elected.  Probably a vast majority.  Our primary and general election process does not allow us to vote-in the consensus candidate.  The process polarizes us and prevents us from giving support to an outsider who may be the best qualified.

We have an excellent chance of Louws and Stalheim as our choices.  This would be the best possible outcome.  But if Stalheim wins, conservatives will be much more upset than liberals would be if Louws were to win.  Louws is our county-wide consensus choice.

We can apply the same to the Bellingham mayor.  Consensus favors Kelli Linville.  Yet, she could be 3rd tonight if Steve Moore attracts a strong conservative vote.  Most political junkies think Kelli will finish 2nd tonight.  But what if our choice is Dan Pike or Steve Moore?  I think a majority of Bellingham voters would be disappointed with that choice.  Even many of us liberals are fed up with Pike.  And Moore is a horrifying prospect to liberals. With instant runoff voting, Kelli would surely win the election.  She would be the second or third choice for those favoring Pike, Moore, or Petree.

Instant Runoff Voting has not been given serious consideration.  The main reason is that it destroys the power of the two parties to select our candidates for us.  And this is the reason I am so much for it.  Do we want to fix American politics?  From the Tea Party to the Green Party, the answer is yes. Well, we have to fix how we select our representatives.  Instant Runoff is the fix.
