This article is for the over 14,000 military veterans in Whatcom County, although the information applies to veterans nationwide. Our Veterans Administration (VA) health care and eventually even disability payments are in imminent and grave risk! Action is needed NOW.

Active and former military members are known for taking care of their own, “having their buddy’s six.”  Now is the time to put that promise to good use.

Last November, I posted an announcement from Liz Witowski, Veterans Service Officer (VSO) of the Whatcom County Veterans Program, that announced President Biden’s expansion of VA health care for life to eligible veterans, i.e., those who had served in certain areas during certain periods. You can read that piece here: VA Health Care for Life? You Now May Be Eligible.

The current administration in Washington has eyed the VA for cuts and has already tossed out, with virtually no notice, 1,000 VA employees. Many of those employees were likely veterans like you and me since one third the federal work force is comprised of former military. This contemptible action flies directly in the face of the growing need for VA workers to deal with the expansion of VA services declared last year. Also tossed out of a job was the VA Inspector General, even though that office saves the VA billions of dollars that might otherwise be lost through fraud and abuse.

Here is what you can do NOW to stop these actions to deprive veterans of their rightful benefits.

Contact your service organizations.

You can take further action by contacting our congressman, Rick Larsen and our senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. I suggest you write to them through their websites because phone calls tie up staff time that might be used to do other work.

We, the veterans, have the capacity, the knowledge and the unity garnered through our years of service to strongly and effectively oppose these actions by the present administration.   We also owe it to the wives and children of our fellow veterans who depend upon the VA.

Act now!

*“I got your six,” essentially means, “I’ve got your back.” The phrase is used throughout the military, by law enforcement, and even by civilians. It’s a way of telling your colleague(s) that you’re you’re backing them up, that there’s no need to worry because you’re there to help out.
