The issue between the Port and the City does NOT appear to be about the technical aspects, that is, whether we need a new Airport Rescue and Fire Facility, or whether there is enough water. No, the issue seems to revolve around the interpretation of policy and past interlocal agreements.
What is amazing is how long this has been going on. The current specific request by the Port to the City goes back to February. By the account given, the underlying disagreement goes back YEARS.
Some questions that come to mind as a result are "How much money will this specific issue unnecessarily cost us taxpayers?" and maybe "How much money has this long term unresolved disagreement cost us?" The people I know at the Port and the City are dedicated, intelligent and hardworking, so the conflict must be deeply significant or it would have gone away long ago. Maybe there is a deeper meaning here...you have to wonder if our friends and neighbors here can't resolve something that important, what can we expect in the rest of the world. You have to wonder.
