State Board invalidates County planning
State Board invalidates County planning
The state has ordered development in rural Whatcom County to stop until our county government enacts zoning laws that protect our rural areas.
Our Whatcom County Council - along with executive Pete Kremen - have been handed a big defeat. For years they have played games with our farms and rural open spaces by delaying protective zoning. They have pretty much ignored state laws as laid out by the Growth Management Act. Good planning recomendations by our County Planning Commission have been repeatedly ignored and defeated by the Council.
Well, the local environmental group Futurewise took the county to the Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board - and won. Yesterday, the Board handed down a ruling invalidating the sneaky end runs of our county government that have allowed sprawl. For many years Sam Crawford has been the wizard behind these schemes as he worked to defeat legally mandated planning. Pete has supported Sam's work.
Bottom line: the state is giving the county government three to four months to start obeying state planning and zoning laws. After that? Well the state can step in. Until then, development in the rural areas is put on hold.
