Kudos to the little man behind the curtain - our Wizard of Ooze. It was masterful how he outmaneuvered Weimer, Fleetwood and Brenner with a clever misdirection play set up by his teammates, Nelson and Crawford.

In an act that hasn't been carried off with such aplomb since Brer Rabbit connived his way into the brier patch, Nelson and Crawford feigned opposition to the grandiose park plan, all its fiscal nonsense and conflicts with our planning policies; while at the same time refusing to let Brenner, Weimer and Fleetwood put off a vote until those conflicts and budget impacts could be considered.

Knowing that Fleetwood and Weimer wanted to table the proposal that would lock the county into substantial future costs, and immediate litigation expense, until a sufficiently specific proposal could be presented and considered in the budget process, neither Nelson or Crawford would support Brenner's motion to table at the outset of discussion.

And that it not be lost on the parlimentarily unschooled, after voting for the motion to table, the three yeahs could not later ask that motion be reconsidered and voted on again. In that setting, Nelson and Crawford were able to deliver the coup de gras.

With only two coucil members outspoken in favor of the proposal, after some hours debate, and after Weimer and Fleetwood had unambiguously indicated how they would vote, should they be forced to immediately, Weimer did everything short of getting down on one knee and begging Nelson to move for reconsideration of the motion to table. He wouldn't budge. Nor was there a peep out of Crawford for reconsideration and postponement.

Now Nelson is either a very ignorant man who can't count to four, too stubborn to allow Weimer and Fleetwood a graceful retreat, or he wanted the proposal passed; (over his strong objections of course.) After the forced vote, and the proposal passed with Crawford, Nelson and Brenner opposed, Crawford could smile like the Cheshire Cat.

In any case, if these two alleged opponents of the re-conveyance proposal really opposed it, they managed to magnificently snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

It was political orchestration at its finest; a thing of beauty. With no one willing to alienate their political base, and everyone wanting something their base would not accept, Weimer and Fleetwod were forced to vote for the proposal Nelson and Crawford ostensibly opposed. And Nelson and Crawford can still posture as fiscal conservatives who were against it.

While our mellifluousness made his end run, Weimer and Fleetwood were left holding the water bucket for him. Nelson and Crawford were probably happy to get out of the building so they could quit laughing up their sleeves.

It was a master stroke, a backhanded shot beyond the opponents reach. Point, set. Now the match moves to another court.

Oh yeah, and the public that sponsors these events; and what of the public's interest? Screw 'em. This is politics.
