Note:  On Thursday evening, I have changed the headline to reflect that Linville's lead did not hold past the evening when it was posted.  She led Pike 5,149 to 5,087 on the count Tuesday eve.  As of Thursday, with virtually all ballots counted, they are virtually tied with Pike ahead 6,795 to 6,757 - 38 votes.

Chalk it up to good campaign work.  Or to Kelli's good reputation with moderates, conservatives, and progressive liberals.  Or to the disappointment by many to Pike's performance as mayor.  All three no doubt were a good percentage of the reasons for Kelli's lead over Pike on the first count tonight.  By Friday, it may shift to one or the other by a percent or two.  The evening is hers to savor.  She polled 5,149 votes to Pike's 5,087.

And there is a fourth factor.  Many conservatives voted for Kelli because they know she can beat Pike, but Steve Moore cannot beat Pike.  They want Pike out and they want a more practical minded mayor.

For Pike this is a huge vote of no confidence in his administration.  This is Bellingham where the more liberal candidate usually wins.  But tonight most of Pike's active supporters from 4 years ago were backing Kelli.  I was in several discussions this evening about how we were fooled or deceived by Pike.  We learned only after the election 4 years ago that he had promised many things to many people with no intention of keeping most of those promises.  Our decisions to support Kelli were not based on emotion but a simple desire for good city government.

Now the general election is Kelli's to lose.  She hopefully will provide us with an informative campaign.  And a campaign that shows us the future is what we expected from Pike four years ago: practical, open, focused on what works, affordable, and inclusive.  We know Kelli is honest and that is a big difference.  We have hope.  Bellingham is such a beautiful place - one of the most beautiful in the country - and yet we manage to have disfunctional government that continually spends money on goofy projects.  I'll bet that with Kelli as mayor we will have clean water from Lake Whatcom four years from now.  Pike promised and then sort of forgot about it.

A quick look at the County Executive election.

Jack Louws is positioned to be our next County Executive.  With him and Doug Ericksen the options for Executive, this is the absolute worst scenario for Pete Kremen.  This gives Tony Larson a huge boost because the conservatives will be turning out in huge numbers come the November election.  The Louws / Ericksen race will be really intense.  I think Louws will win because he will get the liberal vote.  Doug is detested by liberals.  Jack is an honest and honorable guy and that, again, is a difference with his opponent.
