Our investigative team has discovered a new Democratic program that was being quietly led by the former Senate majority leader, and Health Secretary designate, Tom Daschle.
Daschle's anti-tax program takes its name from the wildly successful campaign by then first lady Nancy Reagan; Just Say No to Taxes.
Democrats hope to close the gap with Republicans, far better known for their opposition to taxation. The good news is the Democrats' plan doesn't entail a lot of bickering and legislation to implement.
But on Tuesday, President Obama announced that Daschle was being withdrawn from consideration for Secretary of Health and Human Services. All because somebody loaned him a car.
Ex senator, and now ex designate Daschle, drawing a compelling comparison between his situation and the average American's, pointed out the fundamental unfairness of a system that demands a long suffering public servant report as income use of a limousine and chauffeur from a recipient of his lobbying services.
“Next, teenagers will be taxed because their daddies let them use the family car. Hey, public service is a life of never ending sacrifice. It's no free ride!”
After his defeat for reelection to the senate, Daschle was left with little but the connections made over many years in government and the ability to influence legislation for special interests. Scraping by on a modest income in the low seven figures, it is outrageous that this loyal public servant should be shaken down by the IRS for several hundred thousand dollars.
Like most of us, it's easy to overlook a few hundred thousand in fees, and not think to include compensation our employers failed to report to us on a W2.
Frankly, our elected officials just aren't very well paid and it's amazing, and to their credit, they can manage to become millionaires while burdened with doing the publics business.
What a shame they are plagued and pilloried for their industry by a sniping cadre of ethical extremists.
The real losers in this saga will be average Americans, deprived of the skill and insights Daschle would have brought to the job.
Once even mentioned for the presidency, Daschle has spent much of his time since losing office providing his services to some of the largest players in medicine, drug manufacturing and health care. He was therefore particularly suited to craft health care reform that put regular citizens' interests ahead of everything else.
But the good news is Daschle and members of congress quickly put an end to further scrutiny of the whole sorry affair, saving countless others the embarrassment of explaining similar gifts and gratuities from grateful constituents for jobs well done.
