We invite you to take an extra break for lunch today and drive down to Fairhaven for the flag raising on the new 100 foot tall flagpole. The ceremony starts at 12 noon sharp and will be over by 12:30 pm at the latest. The 20 x 30 foot flag will be raised by the veterans who first installed the old wooden flagpole back in the 1980s. It was also 100 feet tall but made of fir and blew down in a huge November storm in 2005. The new pole is steel. Long may it stand.
Today, Monday, March 24 - 12 noon sharp
In front of the Fairhaven Library
Local speakers plus mayor Dan Pike
First raising of flag on new flagpole
Help us respectfully dedicate this flagpole
If you feel this event deserves some attendance by citizens then please make the effort to attend. Also, please phone some friends who might also have the time to attend and encourage them to come on down to Fairhaven. Remember it will start at 12 - so arrive a few minutes early. We trust this flagpole will last decades, so this is a patriotic event that is a one time thing for most of us.
You know - I should have posted this here days ago. But we sent out press releases to the Herald and other media. And, believe it or not, I try to give the Herald the opportunity to print the news first. I've attended public meetings where Sam Taylor or some Herald reporter was there - and I've waited the 2 to 4 days for their reporting to run in the paper before offering my comments. I've subscribed to the Herald for almost 30 years and enjoy it every morning. I am critical of it but feel a daily newspaper is important to a community.
But purposely ignoring the installation of the tallest flagpole in possibly the 4 northwest counties? Friday morning we phoned the Herald repeatedly as the crane prepared to hoist the $16,000 110 foot steel pole into place. Private donations over two years made this possible. The Herald sent a photographer to Fairhaven to take a photo of the Dirty Dan statue for Saturday's paper - and ignored the flagpole. Ram Construction donated over $8,000 in value with the crane, lift, trucks, skilled welders and structural workers and road crew - just for this community project. Owner Mike Hammes did it because he believes in community and giving back a little.
There is no political agenda here. Just a patriotic community event - and one with real news value. It is just a shame the Herald is so out of touch.
