If you are going to visit the heron nesting area at Post Point Lagoon in the near future, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Several pairs of Great Blue Herons are repairing or building nests in the trees high above the lagoon. This is the only Heron nesting area in Bellingham. It is marvelous to watch such a large bird move gracefully in the sky and amongst the trees carrying twigs and small branches for building materials. That's the good news. I heard the bad news the other day while watching some of the nest construction. It seems that for the last two years, none of the heron fledglings have survived. There is a theory that our other iconic bird, the bald eagle, has set up camp nearby waiting for the opportunity to snatch heron chicks. In fact three eagles were standing watch and hovering around the vicinity as I watched the nest construction. Of course other factors are possibly in play as well including the quality and availability of food.
Kudos to the citizens of Bellingham, the visionaries of our community and all those who work to assure that we do the best to integrate our society harmoniously with nature. If you get a chance, take yourself and your kids or grandkids down to watch some of the magnificence of nature right here in town.
