Change The Mascot Web Site
There is a new link posted in the right column under the category “Good Web Sites.” A subjective determination, obviously. But one that represents what this site is all about.
Change the Mascot is a Native American website dedicated to ending the name “Washington Redskins” in the National Football League. Yes, we spell it out as the NFL sits on its hands on this issue. The site is spearheaded by the Oneida Indian Nation, located near Green Bay, Wisconsin - my home town.
The Oneidas are now leaders in the national Native American effort to gain respect from the rest of us and gain their treaty rights. When I was growing up, back in the 40s and 50s, the Oneidas were seriously discriminated against in Green Bay. I was raised with a prejudice against them - and was completely unaware of it until I left GB. I thought I had been raised without prejudice. I am so pleased the Oneidas have risen over the past 30 years to become political powers in the Green Bay area as well as on the national level.
Do not miss the two minute video - Proud To Be - on this website. Interesting that in a seeming bit of modesty, the Oneida tribe is not mentioned.
