Tim Johnson's Gristle column in today's Cascadia Weekly is a very critical analysis of the Port of Bellingham's new vision for the waterfront redevelopment.  Tim outlines how the port staff, in their presentation to the Bellingham City Council last week, ignored years of hearings, years of public input, and millions in costs that have gone into the waterfront visioning.

And, while he thinks washing the whole port into the bay might be one solution, he says the expansion to 5 commissioners is "more sensibly achieved," and endorses putting the question on the ballot for voters to decide.

The article is well worth reading and I'm pleased to see Johnson lend his voice to the expansion of the port commission.  He has one minor factual error, stating if we elect two new commissioners this November they will take office in 2013.  Actually, they would take office on November 27, 2012, the day our county auditor certifies the election.  As Johnson says, it "cannot happen soon enough."

The port commission meets Monday, May 14, at 3 p.m. in the normal meeting room at their offices on 1801 Roeder Avenue by Squalicum Harbor.  We need a solid attendance of voters at that meeting to show we want the question of expansion to 5 commissioners put on the August primary ballot.  A packed meeting room will help.  If you are willing to attend one port meeting this year, this is the meeting to attend.  There is reason for hope, but we have to follow through and show our support for this change. I wish I could say it in a stronger manner.  Please make room in your schedule for one hour of quiet support next Monday afternoon.  You can speak for a minute, if you want, but just attending will help a lot.
