Sport of Bellingham
Permalink +Mon, Jan 04, 2010, 11:17 pm // Tip Johnson
My abiding interest in the Port of Bellingham sometimes gets me checking the news in an idle moment. Here, for your outside-of-Bellingham perspective on the Port, is what showed up today in a relatively facile search. There's probably more. Please post anything else in a comment!

In Bellingham, cleanup more costly than expected - By BETSY COHEN of the Missoulian
"...the mill’s prime real estate on the waterfront – much like Champion International’s sawmill site along the Clark Fork River in downtown Missoula – was an environmental mess.
Despite high cleanup costs, Bellingham’s community leaders believed the industrial site could be transformed into a residential cluster and multi-use area for the public...
Georgia-Pacific agreed to sell the property for one dollar. In exchange the Port, with help from the city, would be responsible for the specific environmental cleanup of the property and its waterfront, including the mill’s mercury contamination in the waterway... But along the way, unexpected cleanup – and more costs – have emerged, Casey said."

"Newport, Oregon still plans to break ground next month on a facility that will host NOAA's Pacific research fleet...
The Port of Bellingham, Washington, protested that Newport's bid was ineligible since the proposed pier would be in a floodplain...
You know how every good story has an arc to it? No one knows yet how this story will end. So you might say the NOAA arc is incomplete.
In the Old Testament, Noah got the last laugh when his ark turned out to be just the thing to ride out the flood.
Newport and Bellingham are waiting to see who gets the last laugh this time."

PORTLAND NEWS - By Richard Read, The Oregonian
"As a home-state woman done good, NOAA chief (Jane) Lubchenco, an Oregon State University professor before her appointment by President Barack Obama, is unlikely to face such criticism at her appearance May 3.
Yet her agenda is ambitious as she equates ocean exploration and protection with the Apollo moon landing. Lubchenco's agency aims to build a Pacific-fleet headquarters in Newport despite protests from the Port of Bellingham."

NOAA Thumbs Its Nose at 'Rising Political Star' Maria Cantwell - By Laura Onsto, Seattle Weekly
"The Daily Beast named junior Senator Maria Cantwell a rising political star, but apparently the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is unimpressed..."
===
"...the senator accused the agency of attempting to hide details about the proposed shift to Newport and the reason for selecting it over Seattle, Port Angeles, and Bellingham. The Washington Democrat, earlier, did not have very kind words to say about the agency given the fact that she has been waiting for the information for the past two months. Moreover, the senator had also expressed her doubts about the decision taken by the agency as it has not shown active interest in the concerns that have been raised. At the same time, Maria Cantwell had also implied that if pertinent details are not revealed immediately, then she would have no options other than holding a Congressional hearing..."

"Port of Bellingham commissioners have agreed to give Anthony's Restaurant a $27,300 rent credit to compensate for loss of business said to be caused by the nearby construction of the Bellwether Gate project..."
