Riley Sweeney heard from a county resident about how her letter had been rejected by the Herald.  The letter concerned a public political event by a well known elected official.  And the reason is enough to cause us all to pause - and realize that the Bellingham Herald is no longer our newspaper for our news and opinion needs as a community.  It seems to be slowly self destroying itself with sad decisions.

Riley Sweeney on the Herald letters policy.

This comes just as several of us local political websites, blogs, weekly newspapers and radio stations are meeting together.  We are in the process of setting up a cooperative working relationship that will allow local citizens to more easily stay informed of local news.  No one of us small outfits can replace the Herald, but all together we can pick up some of the slack.

For myself, I have subscribed to the Herald for over 30 years and enjoy checking every page every morning over coffee.   But for the last couple years my wife and I have been wondering when the day will come that we will terminate our subscription because it is just not worth it.   Riley's revelation on another issue where the Herald is failing us is just another sad data point on the decline of our local daily newspaper.
